Best VPN for China in 2026: What the Providers Document
No provider promises to work inside mainland China, and their pages say so. On what they publish, Proton VPN documents the most: Stealth on every plan, alternative routing, and a China guide that says to set up before you travel. NordVPN, which pays us a commission, has NordWhisper, but its support pages reported connectivity issues in China on 22 September 2026. VPN use there is restricted; compliance is yours.
Affiliate link: the NordVPN button is an affiliate link and NordVPN pays us a commission if you buy through it; the price you pay is the same either way. The Proton VPN link is a plain link, we have no partnership with Proton.
What can honestly be compared in a VPN for China
Whether a VPN connects from inside mainland China on a given day cannot be verified from Switzerland, and this page does not pretend to. Four things can be compared from the providers’ own pages: a documented obfuscation or stealth protocol, the only technical answer any of them offers to traffic inspection; the provider’s own statement on China; payment and refund terms, since you buy before you travel and may never connect; and the legal frame, because China regulates VPN services and a traveller who uses one does so on their own responsibility.
Best VPN for China: what the five providers document
| Provider | Obfuscation protocol, as documented | Provider’s own statement on China | Refund | CHF: first term, then a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | NordWhisper on Windows, Android, Linux, iOS, macOS; Obfuscated Servers now run on it (Linux: OpenVPN only) | Windows support page: “connectivity issues in the China region”; configurations “recently been blocked on Windows”; advises other platforms | 30 days, new subscriptions, via live chat | 3.29 a month Basic; 88.83 for 27 months, then 133.08 |
| ExpressVPN | “Automatic obfuscation on every server” on supported platforms; Lightway | No China page on its site | 30 days, first-time subscribers | 2.90 a month Basic; 81.20 for 28 months, then 90.00 |
| Surfshark | Obfuscated OpenVPN (Windows, Linux, Android, iOS apps); NoBorders mode | “Connecting from China” article admits recent challenges; recommends manual WireGuard if the app cannot connect | 30 days; bought from Surfshark or via Paddle, Google Play or Cleverbridge | 2.49 a month Starter; 67.23 for 27 months, then 64.89 (before VAT) |
| Proton VPN | Stealth (WireGuard over TLS) on Android, Windows, macOS, iOS, every plan including Free; alternative routing | China guide: set up before travelling, enable Stealth and alternative routing; no VPN can guarantee reliability in China | 30 days, all subscriptions | 3.49 a month VPN Plus; 83.76 for 24 months, then 83.88 |
| CyberGhost | None documented; WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2 | No statement on use inside China; its China page is about a Chinese address via virtual servers outside the country | 45 days on plans of six months or longer; 14 monthly | 2.11 a month; 54.86 for 26 months, then 54.86 |
Quotations from the providers’ support pages, read 22 September 2026; Swiss prices from their pricing pages, read 23 September 2026. Surfshark’s prices are before VAT, its renewal from its renewal-prices page. Nothing here is a connection test from inside China.
What each provider actually says about China
Proton VPN is the only one of the five with a China guide that gives instructions: it describes the Great Firewall, calls setting up before arrival the single most effective step, lists the settings to try (Stealth, alternative routing through third-party networks when Proton’s servers are blocked, switching between Stealth and Smart) and says plainly that no service can guarantee reliability there. Stealth is free, so the settings can be tested without paying.
NordVPN keeps a support section, “I can’t connect from China”, with one article per platform. On the day we read it, the Windows article reported connectivity issues in the region, said its configurations had recently been blocked on Windows, and offered another device as the workaround. NordWhisper, built for restrictive networks, runs on all five platforms and now powers the Obfuscated Servers category: a documented capability alongside a documented current problem.
Surfshark admits challenges in China and points to manual WireGuard set-up when the app fails. ExpressVPN advertises automatic obfuscation but publishes no China page we could find, so its position is unknown rather than negative. CyberGhost documents no obfuscation protocol, and its only China page is about appearing to be in China from outside.
What the providers document before travel
- Proton VPN recommends setting up before arrival Its China guide calls this the single most effective measure; NordVPN’s workaround for its Windows problem is another platform.
- Each documents a mode for restrictive networks Proton VPN recommends Stealth, with alternative routing on. NordVPN documents NordWhisper and Obfuscated Servers, which now run on it. Surfshark documents NoBorders, and a manual WireGuard connection if its app cannot connect.
- Live chat runs on the provider’s website That website may not load, so the providers’ email support is the fallback.
- The refund deadline does not change for China 30 days at four providers, 45 at CyberGhost; a refund request has to arrive inside that window.
Verdict: which VPN to buy for China
Proton VPN is the best-documented option for China, and we have no affiliate relationship with Proton; NordVPN pays us a commission if you buy through this page. Proton wins on the two criteria that count: a documented stealth protocol on every plan, including the free one, and a China guide that says what to do and admits what it cannot promise. NordVPN is second, with NordWhisper on all platforms and a full support section for the country, but that section reported a live problem on Windows on the day of writing; read it before you buy. Surfshark is a fair third. Surfshark and Nord Security, NordVPN’s parent, have belonged to the same holding company since 2022 (Surfshark’s about page); we earn commission only from NordVPN. ExpressVPN publishes obfuscation but no China statement; CyberGhost publishes neither. The providers that address China put set-up before departure first.
