NordVPN Annual vs 2-Year Plan: Which Term Costs Less Over Time?

On NordVPN’s Swiss pricing page the 1-year Basic plan costs CHF 62.28 for the first 12 months (5.19 a month) and the 2-year plan CHF 88.83 for the first 27 months (3.29 a month). Both renew yearly at CHF 133.08. Over three years that is CHF 328.44 on the annual route against CHF 221.91 on the 2-year route; the annual plan only wins if you stop after twelve months.

Correction, 22 September 2026. An earlier version of this page used US-dollar prices from May 2026, projected costs over an assumed four-year “retention horizon” and suggested re-subscribing through a fresh promo link. The prices below are NordVPN’s current Swiss prices, the projection is arithmetic you can check, and the re-subscription advice is withdrawn (editorial standards).

NordVPN annual vs 2-year plan: the prices side by side

NordVPN sells three terms: monthly, 1-year and 2-year; the 2-year term currently includes three extra months and is billed up front for 27 months. There is no 3-year plan.

Swiss-franc prices from NordVPN’s pricing page, 22 September 2026, VAT may apply. NordVPN’s percentages compare the intro price with the yearly renewal price, not with the monthly plan: the Basic renewal divided by twelve is CHF 11.09 a month, so 3.29 against 11.09 is the 70% and 5.19 against 11.09 the 53%. The tier decides the features, the term only the price.

What the annual and the 2-year plan cost over three years

The renewal price is identical on both terms, so the whole difference sits in the first term and in when the first renewal falls due: after 12 months on the annual route, after 27 on the 2-year route.

Sums of the prices above at today’s renewal rates, which NordVPN says are subject to change.

The gap opens in year two. By month 24 the annual route has paid 62.28 + 133.08 = CHF 195.36; the 2-year route has paid CHF 88.83 and is covered for three months longer, CHF 106.53 less for more service.

When the annual plan makes sense, and when the 2-year plan does

  1. Will you still want a VPN in month 13? If yes, take the 2-year term: the 1-year renewal (CHF 133.08) costs more than the whole 2-year first term (CHF 88.83). The 2-year plan costs 88.83 − 62.28 = CHF 26.55 more today; if that is the obstacle, the annual plan is the second choice.
  2. Do you need it for a fixed period under a year? Monthly Basic at CHF 14.09 beats the annual plan for up to four months (4 × 14.09 = CHF 56.36); from five months (CHF 70.45) the 1-year plan at CHF 62.28 costs less.
  3. Unsure about the tier? Decide before paying: NordVPN’s pricing page says a plan change takes effect when the current subscription expires, and the 30-day money-back guarantee covers a wrong first choice on either term.
Do not cancel and re-register as a “new customer”. NordVPN’s offer terms limit introductory prices to new customers and to the first period; buying the intro price again through a second account is against those terms, and we do not recommend it. If the renewal price does not suit you, cancel auto-renewal and let the term run out.

Renewal, cancellation and the 30-day refund on both terms

  1. Auto-renewal is on by default After the first term (12 or 27 months) the plan renews yearly at the then-applicable renewal price. Annual renewals are billed up to 14 days in advance, with a notification email before the charge.
  2. Cancel in the Nord Account Log in, open the NordVPN subscription and cancel auto-renewal; access continues until the end of the paid period.
  3. Refund within 30 days of the initial purchase Every plan carries the 30-day money-back guarantee; the request goes through NordVPN’s 24/7 support. It covers the first purchase, not a forgotten renewal.

NordVPN annual vs 2-year plan: common questions

Is NordVPN’s 2-year plan cheaper than the annual plan?
Per month, yes: Basic is CHF 3.29 on the 2-year term against CHF 5.19 on the 1-year term (Swiss page, 22 September 2026). Up front the 2-year plan costs more, CHF 88.83 against CHF 62.28, but covers 27 months instead of 12; both then renew at CHF 133.08 a year.
What does NordVPN charge at renewal?
The same on both terms: CHF 133.08 a year for Basic, CHF 209.88 for Complete and CHF 259.08 for Ultra on the Swiss page. Renewal is yearly after the first term, and NordVPN says renewal prices are subject to change.
How much does NordVPN cost over three years?
Basic on the annual route: 62.28 + 133.08 + 133.08 = CHF 328.44 for 36 months. On the 2-year route: 88.83 + 133.08 = CHF 221.91 for 39 months. Paid monthly: 36 × 14.09 = CHF 507.24.
Can I get the new-customer price again when my plan ends?
NordVPN’s offer terms limit introductory prices to new customers and to the first period. We do not recommend registering a second account to buy the intro price again. If the renewal price is too high, cancel auto-renewal before the renewal date.
Can I switch from the annual plan to the 2-year plan mid-term?
NordVPN’s pricing page says a plan change made in the Nord Account takes effect when the current subscription expires. Within the first 30 days of a purchase you can instead use the money-back guarantee and buy the other term.
